Born in 1977, Jeremy grew up in the northernmost part of Brampton, Ontario, spending much of his childhood near the vast farming communities of central Ontario. Born to parents with a genuine love for the outdoors, he spent nearly every weekend camping in northern Ontario’s national and provincial parks. The drive from Brampton to these campgrounds passed through open land where the horizon stretched unbroken—perhaps a single farmhouse appearing every few miles. When Jeremy began showing an interest in art, he naturally gravitated toward the subjects he knew best: open land, farming communities, and rocky shorelines. After experimenting with various techniques in acrylic, he discovered that painting rural areas provided both the greatest challenge and the most satisfaction. Capturing these scenes allowed him to explore how light interacts with the land. One of his main artistic pursuits became portraying different lighting effects—from early morning sunrises to mid-winter evenings. The way light transforms buildings and landscapes continues to fuel his passion for painting. Most of Jeremy’s paintings depict scenes from late fall or winter. He finds that by painting the landscape in its barest form, there is nothing to obscure its natural beauty. In contrast, summer’s foliage often blocks the pure expression of light. “I have found that painting a winter landscape allows me to focus all of my attention on the light and mood of my painting, and not on the foliage of a tree. This allows me to explore new ways to produce interesting lighting effects in my landscapes.”
